In July 2023, Corporación María Perlaza completed the third phase of its intervention at the Nazareth campus of Institución Educativa Simón Bolívar in Buenaventura.

At the time, the goal was to strengthen learning environments and continue supporting the educational community through the Corporation’s pedagogical transfer model.

Three years later, this intervention invites us to reflect on something that goes beyond infrastructure.

Water Also Protects Education

The recent water shortage emergency affecting Buenaventura highlights the importance of having reliable basic services to ensure the well-being of communities.

Access to safe drinking water directly impacts health, nutrition, and the functioning of educational institutions. When this resource becomes scarce, the conditions that make teaching and learning possible are also put at risk. Source: Buenaventura Cómo Vamos

This reality reminds us that talking about education also means talking about access to water.

A Commitment to More Resilient Schools

As part of Corporación María Perlaza’s ongoing support in Buenaventura, the third phase of the project at the Nazareth campus was completed in 2023.

The project benefited approximately 460 students, as well as the school’s teaching and administrative staff.

The work included improvements to classrooms from second grade through eleventh grade, the provision of furniture, paving of the main courtyard, and renovation of the school’s restroom facilities.

The project also incorporated a rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of 20,000 liters, intended to supply toilets and sinks, as well as a drinking water system to ensure the permanent operation of the school kitchen.

More than a physical improvement, these interventions were designed to strengthen learning conditions and contribute to the well-being of the entire educational community.

A Commitment That Continues to Transform Communities

At Corporación María Perlaza, we believe that transforming a school means much more than improving its infrastructure.

It means creating environments that foster learning, promoting sustainable solutions, and working hand in hand with communities to build opportunities that endure over time.

Today, on Buenaventura’s 486th anniversary, we proudly remember this legacy and reaffirm our commitment to continuing to promote projects that make dignified, quality education possible.
